How Do I Get More Customer Reviews for My Store?

Written by Bob Phibbs, the Retail Doctor | August 14, 2026

Do you ever stream a movie without checking a review? I don't, and your shoppers are no different. They're reading reviews of products, brands, and your individual store before they ever walk in. Reviews are the modern word of mouth, and there are two habits that build them.

Habit one to build reviews: ask. People don't leave reviews because they're comfortable; they leave them because somebody asked. Go to your Google Business Profile, grab your direct review link, and keep it on your phone as a QR Code and your desktop where you can paste it in seconds. Then, after a good sale, say anything over $100, hold up your QR Code on your phone, text or email the customer: "Did you like your experience with us? I'd really appreciate a one-line review on Google." One line. Low ask, high response. I had a multi-store client have a contest for the location with the most reviews. The winner was over 1000 in a two month time! And Google is watching the flow: it wants to recommend the business most likely to earn the next good review, so every one you collect makes you easier to find.

You can ask other ways too: at the end of a great sales interaction, a small card in the bag, a line in your newsletter. The channel matters less than the asking.

Habit two: respond to new reviews. Set aside one morning a week to monitor your public reviews and comment on them - those could be on Google, Facebook, Bing, Yelp, you name it. Thank the good ones. For a bad one, ask the person to call you. That public reply does double duty: it may recover the unhappy customer, and it shows every future reader that a real person runs this store and fixes problems.

Reviews are happening about you right now whether you participate or not. Ask, respond, repeat weekly. That's the whole machine.
