Retail Jobs:10 Things You Need To Know To Get And Keep

retail job successWhether they’re looking for a retail sales job for the summer, a second job, or a new career, many people turn to jobs in retail while they look for other opportunities.

Retail can be the best job for anyone –  from college-age to past retirement – to develop their people skills.  If you choose a job in retail, you have to be willing to be what the employer wants.

In my day, you didn’t have to know anything to be hired or to stay in retail. It didn’t matter then, but it certainly matters now.

Why?

It’s still true that retailers recognize that some employees may be short-term but they still demand an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. But now the retail world is much more competitive now than ever before.

If you are looking for a job in retail, or if are already working there, you need to understand you can’t get away with being just a warm body any more. You need to see what you can give rather than get from your retail job. Continue reading Retail Jobs:10 Things You Need To Know To Get And Keep »

Retailer Tip For Tax Day

retail salesIt’s Tax Day in the US, a time when many people, including retailers, look at their past year’s income and:

And you’ll hear practically nothing about independent retailers’ successes.

Don’t let them get away with that.

Here’s how to leverage your participation and success in American Express’ Small Business Saturday. Continue reading Independent Retailers: How To Pitch Your Small Business Saturday Success To Reporters »

5 Cash Flow Tips For Retailers In October

retailer cash flowThe holiday season is about to begin and every retailer is glad for it because cash flow will seem to get better.

As I stated in last month’s cash flow post, for the next few months, revenues will increase, profits will blossom and any cash flow strain will become a distant memory. Indeed, most retailers will realize the bulk of their profits in the last quarter of the year.

Still, while we’re preparing for good increases over last year -if nothing else than because we have an additional two shopping days –  the prudent retailer will take the opportunity to plan for the leaner months that will follow in the New Year after the party’s over. Retailer Cash Flow: 7 Tips To Maximize Yours In September

cash flow retailerRetailers have always been at the mercy of the yearly calendar. As the seasons change, the climate of the market changes, which can mean that your cash flow changes drastically from month to month.

That means the potential for less cash in your wallet.

Retailers are likely to see spikes in cash flow at some points throughout the year—particularly as the holiday season draws near and people are preparing to celebrate the stretch from Halloween to Christmas with friends and family.

Depending on the specific type of retail store you run, you will face different challenges throughout the year. For example if you are a retailer that sells snow blowers and you don’t have a cold winter, your Q1 of the following year will be lean as sales did not materialize and no matter of promotions will get them off your hand.
