I agree with most of these, however, if your manager cannot treat the associates with respect, do not expect to uphold these values. We are also people, even if we are not customers and treating us badly will not help your sales.

Wow Marissa you are so right. Impatience with people who are not like you is rampant in the service industry. Maybe I should do a companion piece - I'll ask my Facebook fans to help develop it. Thanks again Marissa!

I would like to make a similar list of how customer's should behave. I work in retail and it made me much more aware of how I treat those in the service industry. I have had customers be so insensitive and ignorant that they literally make my employees cry by inferring that they are dumb or don't speak the language because they are an ethnic minority. Its simple things like responding when we say "hello". Also, it is polite to start an interaction with "hello", or I would even settle for "excuse me..." before just blurting out "where is the...?" If you have a full drink, please dont throw it into the trash can. If you throw a piece of garbage at the can and miss, please try again. Overall, remember that we are people too with feelings.

Our business is hospitality and we have had experience in retail. These tips are valuable for anyone serving the public. Smiles are good investments--the more you give the more you get. Respect your work, your self and your colleagues. Your positive attitude makes you feel better and helps you be successful. MAKE it a great day!

Love, Love this. I own Especially For You Flowers in Salt Lake and I try to practice these daily. Would like to add : Stop back in, we get new arrivals daily. Hand them your business card, if you have a website it should be on it and let them know of any upcoming events in your area. ie: Holidays on Broadway is Friday night, treats, music and fun!

Bob,

Excellent retail suggestions ("50 Things...Employees Should Never Do...."). You've done it once again! Thank you for providing helpful and important information to improve customer service. In my 30 plus years of experience in sales, this information is some of the best I have seen. As usual, your guidance is right on target and easy to follow. Thanks again. Danielle
